Kids-all ages, lots of room to run and play, beach is a bit rocky and water shoes or sandals come in handy

So, this is El Niño? In the middle of February at San Clemente beach you wouldn't know it. The weather is absolutely perfect, in the low eighties and brilliantly sunny. The water, I imagine, is chilly. I'm not brave enough to try, as I can only see a few squealing children and several surfers in full wet suits have taken the plunge. I might stick a toe in later.
For me, getting out to the beach can be a headache, and today was no exception. The traffic was heavy, increasing our drive time by an hour. I'm always a stickler about checking weather and traffic before leaving and the weather made the longer drive worthwhile, in this case. The parking at this beach isn't great-the lot was small and full and the nearby streets had meters, also full. Free parking can be found if you're willing to walk. My kids are older and into fitness and happy to make the hike.
Have a train enthusiast in the family? We do, which makes this beach especially fun. The train tracks run behind the beach and a hiking trail follows safely alongside. We chose this beach because of the hiking trail. Prefer the Metro-Link over the drive? Perfect stop. There are also picnic tables, fire pits, and bathrooms (although it was out of toilet paper-a short walk to the next bathroom over and we were in luck).
Across the street and on the pier there were several places to eat. I can't speak to the price or the quality of food as we brought a picnic. All in all a beautiful day at the beach.
